Haematopoietic stem cell transplantation in Hong Kong (Supplement 3)

چکیده
In Hong Kong, the first case of haematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) was performed at the Bone Marrow Transplant Center, Queen Mary Hospital (QMH) in May 1990 for a female patient with acute myeloblastic leukaemia (AML) with human leukocyte antigen (HLA)–matched sibling donor.1 Since then three more transplant centres have been established, including Prince of Wales Hospital (PWH) in 1991, Queen Elizabeth Hospital in 1995, and Tuen Mun Hospital in 2006. Paediatric HSCT, both autologous and allogeneic, is performed at QMH and PWH. For adult patients, autologous HSCT is performed at all four hospitals while QMH is the only centre for allogeneic HSCT in adults. Unfortunately, a central registry of all HSCT activities is yet to be established in Hong Kong. Such a central registry is desirable not only for monitoring HSCT activities, but also for gathering information on long-term survival, late complications, uncommon conditions as well as changes in trends over the years which will help in planning the HSCT service for the future. Unofficial estimates of about 170 HSCTs are performed annually and a total of a little over 2000 HSCTs have been performed up to the end of 2008. Among the latter, 1708 (approximately 85%) were performed at QMH at a rate of about 130 per annum.

Glucose-6-phosphate-dehydrogenase deficiency and haematopoietic stem cell transplantation in Chinese patients.
Deficiency in glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD), an X-linked recessive red cell enzymopathy, is endemic in Southern Chinese. Universal screening of newborn is done in Hong Kong, Taiwan and Singapore, among other places. In Hong Kong, 4.8% of males are affected and seven common G6PD alleles account for over 99% of all defects. Male hemizygotes suffer from severe deficiency, while female h...

متن کاملUnrelated donor haematopoietic stem cell transplantation for adult patients with haematological malignancies.
Unrelated donor (URD) is an acceptable source of stem cell grafts for adults. With the growth in available URD, improved human leukocyte antigen (HLA) typing technology and better understanding of HLA matching, the number of URD haematopoietic stem cell transplantation (URD-HSCT) is increasing dramatically in recent years. Peripheral blood stem cells have surpassed bone marrow as the preferred ...

Familial haemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis is a rare but invariably fatal disease without haematopoietic stem cell transplantation. Genetic defect identification is useful for confirming a clinical diagnosis, predicting the risk of future recurrence, and defining haemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis predisposition in asymptomatic family members. Notably, familial haemophagocytic lymphohistiocy...
متن کاملHaematopoietic stem cell transplantation for thalassaemia in Chinese patients.
Beta thalassaemia major is a common hereditary haematological disease in southern Chinese. Advances in transfusion and iron chelation improve survival but haematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is still the only curative treatment. Due to repeated blood transfusion and iron overload, thalassaemia patients undergoing HSCT are at a higher risk of graft rejection and transplant-related mo...
